Group^^ Returning to Nature
Now for our group artworks:
Type:Charcoal Drawing
Media: Small black feathers, pencil and charcoal (mixed media)
We have named our drawing: Returning to Nature.
This picture depicts a nude girl holding flower petals while standing in the midst of a river. She has large wings spreading from her back and her long, wavy hair covers most of her body. The petal she is holding is carried by the wind and some lands in the water. Vines from the water twines around her legs. The girl has a serene expression and is looking at the petals in her hand.
The girl is drawn with a side profile and the lighting is very dramatic with a glow around her that is portrayed with white and black contrasts. The shadows were made by smudging a thin line of charcoal. The background has no clouds, which are the common representation of a sky, but instead it is a gentle diagonal gradient from dark to light and the line of horizon is merged with river that looks endless and calm.
We have decided to use charcoal as it was meant to be a beautiful piece of nature artwork and nature, as we believe first evolved from black and white. Black and white are simple yet inspiring and it will also not confuse the viewers. And at night, or at dawn, the only colors are black and white; Black being the darkness, and white being the purity of the night, namely, the moon.
What we wanted to convey to the viewers about the artwork is the desire to return to nature. The flower petals represent nature being torn apart and the river is nature. The flower petals are returning to nature. Also, the girl, being nude, represents mankind in its purest form. The wings drawn on the back of the girl makes the girl seem mystical and magical, like a goddess freeing mankind from its sins. That was what we intended and I feel that we have succeeded.
