Group^^ The Battle of Life (with an Alice in Wonderland Theme)

3rd group artwork:) A ceramic+ cloth+sewing+chess board one

We have named this artwork: The Battle of Life (with an Alice in Wonderland theme)

This is a rather creative piece of artwork, consisting of 4 ceramic pieces, each simply a sphere on a cone. The pieces are also done with consideration of our height differences. Although the basic shape is simple, we have each customized each of our “chess” pieces- the bass and the head. If observed closely, FangNi a.k.a. Komui’s chess piece is taller than the rest with a coiled pile of shit as a base and has a hat with a simple ribbon. Svena a.k.a. Itachi’s chess piece is of average height and has a heart base with a slightly tilted crown with a heart in the center. Siting a.k.a. Akuma’s chess piece has a mushroom as a base and mouse ears. Pangxin a.k.a. Lero’s chess piece has a cat base and carefully molded cat ears.

We have also made mini clothes for each of our characters and are based on an Alice in Wonderland theme. Itachi’s is the Red Queen, thus the colors Red, White and Black. Komui’s is the Mad Hatter, thus the hat and the colors Brown and White and Black. Lero’s is the Cheshire Cat, thus the chosen color blue. Akuma’s is the Dormouse (that fights) and has chosen to give her character a …

This artwork represents our desire to become enemies and yet allies. This is the battle of life. We are friends in school and in normal circumstances, but when competition arises and arouses our fighting spirit, we will become enemies if we must and fight for ourselves or our priorities. This also shows how harsh life is and how one might abandon everything for a deemed more important responsibility, dream or mission.

We have chosen Alice in The Wonderland theme as for one, we all think that it is popular both as a well made movie and a fantastic story book that each and everyone knows and acknowledges. Red Queen was “friends” with the Mad Hatter and in the end, The Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat and the Dormouse became allies; like they were switching sides and the ally became an enemy. We have also chosen a chess as part of the representation as many famous battles were planned on boards similar to a chess board and a chess board also makes use of enemies and allies to win- who must you sacrifice to win?

Group^^ Eternity

We have named our drawing: Eternity

The clock we have designed is an antique clock and we have intended it to be dating quite a long time ago, where elves and dwarfs and spirits roamed the earth. And magic. The clock hands all point directly to the sign, infinite. This shows that time has forever stopped at eternity. The clock rim is a gold ring while the clock wood is a reddish fading to brown gradient which gives the clock a very woody and olden feel. The clock rim is decorated with golden designs and compliment the reddish wood surrounding the clock nicely. The center of the clock is filled with a light lavender swirling color and makes the clock seem very mystical and magical. Perhaps dreamy even.

The center point of the clock is a large, 3D “X” which will strike the viewers, the idea we have gotten from Matisse’s The Green Stripe. This is hardly an ordinary clock and I think it is one of the most successful artworks we have accomplished.

Group^^ Returning to Nature

Now for our group artworks:

Type:Charcoal Drawing
Media: Small black feathers, pencil and charcoal (mixed media)

We have named our drawing: Returning to Nature.

This picture depicts a nude girl holding flower petals while standing in the midst of a river. She has large wings spreading from her back and her long, wavy hair covers most of her body. The petal she is holding is carried by the wind and some lands in the water. Vines from the water twines around her legs. The girl has a serene expression and is looking at the petals in her hand.

The girl is drawn with a side profile and the lighting is very dramatic with a glow around her that is portrayed with white and black contrasts. The shadows were made by smudging a thin line of charcoal. The background has no clouds, which are the common representation of a sky, but instead it is a gentle diagonal gradient from dark to light and the line of horizon is merged with river that looks endless and calm.

We have decided to use charcoal as it was meant to be a beautiful piece of nature artwork and nature, as we believe first evolved from black and white. Black and white are simple yet inspiring and it will also not confuse the viewers. And at night, or at dawn, the only colors are black and white; Black being the darkness, and white being the purity of the night, namely, the moon.

What we wanted to convey to the viewers about the artwork is the desire to return to nature. The flower petals represent nature being torn apart and the river is nature. The flower petals are returning to nature. Also, the girl, being nude, represents mankind in its purest form. The wings drawn on the back of the girl makes the girl seem mystical and magical, like a goddess freeing mankind from its sins. That was what we intended and I feel that we have succeeded.

Lero: Artwork 1~ Desire for Childhood and the Four Seasons

This artwork shows a kite on a background made up of three varying shades of green. The colors used in this artwork are all very bright and consist of mostly greenish and yellowish colors, thus having an equal share of warm and cool colors. On the left side of the art piece the word “Childhood” is spelt sideways with slightly decorative patterns at both ends (top and bottom) of the word, and on light brown background instead of green. A thin line in red separated the words and the kite, which is divided into four areas each showing a different season in the year.

Some part of the artwork the glass deco has more texture and are rougher than other and some of the colors used are mixed. The whole artworks, especially the green background, are also all “broken into pieces” like mosaic, other than the pictures in the kite.

The whole artwork was made to represent “childhood”, or my desire for it again, as the word at the left side of the picture suggest, as well as the desire for the four seasons that I experienced when I was still in china when I was still young. This was meant to be shown from the kite, which was a common representation of childhood happiness and the different, smaller pieces of drawing in the kite showing the four seasons as mentioned earlier to represent what were the things I used to do when I was still a child or simply what I had experienced (autumn, winter…). The background of the artwork was done in varying shades of green because it was meant to represent something like the leaves of a tree, thus making the kite a kite with a broken string, or in this case without a string and was stuck in a tree, intending to mean that it’s a lost kite that can’t be found again even though I want it back, just like a my childhood, therefore having a kind of “nostalgic” feeling to the artwork, dispute the bright and cheerful colors.

I think I was probably successful in representing “childhood and the four seasons”. However, like my two of my other artwork, it’s in fact not very successful in representing “my desire” unless people who see it already knows the theme of the artwork done by our group or can think very deeply.
